The Deputy Secretary General of the PSRM-PSOE and Secretary of Economy, Gender Equality and Public Policies, Gloria Alarcón, has shown her full support to the Councilor of Alguazas City Council who received threats and sexist insults, Soledad Bermúdez.
In an act held to support the Councilor for Urbanism, Environment, Personnel and Citizen Security of this session, the Socialists showed their firm defense of equality between women and men, as well as their commitment to the fight against gender violence in any of their expressions.
Alarcón remarked that Soledad Bermúdez performs her work at the head of the Consistory in a very professional manner and that what happened a few weeks ago has to do with a continued succession of harassment and intimidation based on sex, by those who do not know the meaning of the word dignity .
He pointed out that the exercise of political activity requires a high level of dignity, because those who carry out a political activity do not manage their own affairs, but the general interest of all citizens, which means that the fulfillment of the duties inherent in his position must be carried out with the highest degree of moral excellence.
"This does not seem to have been what has happened in Alguazas in recent months by people with a desire for public responsibility, who have behaved with a total lack of dignity towards our companion, and they have done it through harassment, intimidation, the insult and the discrediting of their work, even reaching the physical threat, which responds to two factors: the fact of being a woman and being public, "he said.
The socialist leader recalled that feminism is equality.
"And we are feminists because we have the conviction that women and men must receive the same salary for the same work, because both must develop professionally and socially in equal conditions, because there is no choice but to defend the freedom to walk on the street without receiving words obscene, because it is intolerable that women who perform public responsibilities receive insults and threats only because there are those who are upset that women have power, "he said.
Finally, Alarcón stressed that, in just two months, "with an enormous effort", the Government of Spain has complied with the State Pact against Gender Violence and has made available to all territories and local entities the items of spending to prevent and combat this issue, in addition to returning the powers to the municipalities in the promotion of equality and the fight against this type of violence.
"Any public display of sexual harassment in our region, regardless of the political party to which the victim belonged, has been denounced by the PSOE, and they have received our support, because a threat to public office is a threat to all the people who voted for it, "he concluded.
