The Civil Guard detained a septuagenarian for the alleged poisoning of two dogs (27/11/2017)

Apparently, he introduced rodenticide into several sausages that he disseminated through a local park

He is credited with the alleged responsibility of the crime of animal abuse

Two dogs have resulted in serious physical sequelae due to the ingestion of toxic substances

The Civil Guard of the Region of Murcia has developed in Alguazas an investigation aimed at clarifying the causes of the poisoning of two dogs that have culminated with the arrest of a person as alleged author of the crime of animal abuse.

The proceedings were initiated when a neighbor of the locality of Alguazas denounced before the Civil Guard the poisoning of their two dogs, provoked, presumably by a neighbor.

The complainant stated that she usually takes her two dogs for a walk in a park near her home and that, recently, the animals had become ill, with vomiting and colic, so she had to transfer them to the Veterinary Center.

The dogs had to undergo surgery for rodenticide intake and resulted in serious physical sequelae.

The aggrieved herself gave the agents pieces of sausage pieces that she had collected from the park where she was walking her dogs, for analysis.

The samples were sent to the Forensic Toxicology and Veterinary Service of the University of Murcia, which, once analyzed, determined that it was a rodenticide, a pesticide used to kill rodents that, due to the physiology of a large part of the animals, represents a potential danger for domestic animals that, if ingested, may suffer the same consequences as rodents.

The investigations carried out by the Benemérita have allowed the identification of a male person, 71 years old and neighbor of the complainant, as the alleged perpetrator of the crime of animal abuse.

The proceedings have been made available to the Court of Instruction number 3 of Molina de Segura (Murcia).

The crime of animal abuse

The crime related to the protection of domestic animals (animal abuse) is included in the Penal Code, which defines it as the act of unjustifiably mistreating animals, by any means or procedure, causing injuries that seriously impair their health or the death and is punishable by three to eighteen months of imprisonment and special disqualification from one to four years for the exercise of profession, trade or trade that is related to animals and for the possession of animals.
